Dear Mr. Mower,
During the last research session, Susanna Hansdotter was located living in Ramsberg, Örebro, Sweden in 1746. Also located was a Carin Thomasdotter, born in 1703, who was the daughter of Thomas Pahlsson and Elisabeth Pahlsdotter. This research session continued to explore this information. Thomas Pahlson married Elizabeth Pavalsdotter in 1695 in Ramsberg.1 I followed Thomas Pahlson and Elisabeth Pahlsdotter in the household examinations and found the family from 1699 through to the 1754 to 1772 examination.2 Thomas died about 1727. Carin remained in her mother's household through all of the examinations, with her birth year given alternately as 1704 and 1706. In the final examination, she is listed as Catharina. She died in 1761. This Carin, then, cannot be a match for the mother of Susanna Hansdotter, as Susanna's mother was in Lindesberg by the 1750's.
I also searched Ramsberg's moving records from 1750 to 1755 for Carin and Susanna. I found a Catharina Thomasdotter, but the corresponding household examination shows that she was born in 1739.3 I also searched all of the Ramsberg household examination of 1723 to 1733 but found no record of any Carin Thomasdotter other than the daughter of Thomas Pahlson.
I returned to the Lindesberg records to search probate records for Carin Thomasdotter, but found no record. I also searched the church accountings around the time of Susanna's birth, but found no record of Carin. Carin's household examination of 1765 to 1775 in Snugga, Lindesberg, references her removal to Limnas, but a search of Limnas showed no record of Carin.
In all of the household examinations for Carin, she gives her place of birth as N. Kopparberg. This is a civil district, but the Rosenberg Gazetteer also indicates that Nya Kopparberget is a railroad station and postal station in Ljusnarsberg.4 A wikipedia search revealed that Nya Kopparberget was the original name of the town of Kopparberg.5 So, when Carin is giving her place of birth, she is likely referring to Ljusnarsberg. In addition, Susanna's birthplace listings of Kerberget and similar are likely all variations of Kopparberget. Because of this, I returned to the records of Ljusnarsberg and searched the tax lists from 1735 to 1738 and the moving out records of 1753 to 1763, but found no record of Carin Thomasdotter. Unfortunately, many records that could be helpful are not available for Ljusnarsberg and Lindesberg, including the earlier moving records, confirmations, and church accounts.
In the September 2010 report, two Karin Thomasdotter's of Ljusnarsberg were mentioned as possible matches for the mother of Susanna. One was the daughter of Thomas Andersson and Karin of Nybygge and the other was the daughter of Tomas Tomsson of Stor Kumblan. I searched the Ljusnarsberg marriages from 1688 to 1704 for the marriage of these two Thomases. Thomas Thomason of Stor Kumblan married Kerstin Pahrsdotter October 7, 1703.6 Thomas Andersson married Karin Jacobsdotter September 23, 1688.7 A search of Ljusnarsberg marriages from 1715 to 1740 for Carin, Catharina, or Caisa Thomasdotter revealed a Catharina Thomasdotter of Stor Kumblan to Johan Matson from Sikfors in Hällefors on October 15, 1738.8 I found Jan Matson and Catharina Tomasdotter in the Hällefors household examination of 1749 to 1753.9 Both were reported as born in 1715, rather late for your Carin, and had no daughter named Susanna. This, then, eliminates the Karin Thomasdotter, daughter of Thomas Thomason and Kerstin Pahrsdotter as a possible match for the mother of Susanna. Further research should be done on the family of Thomas Andersson and Karin Jacobsdotter to determine if their daughter could be the right Karin. This should include probate records for both parents.
I did find a Susanna born in Ljusnars Nås, Ljusnarsberg to Jon Matson on May 20, 1734.10 Household examinations show the parents of Susanna as Jonas Matson and Karin or Cathrina Matzdotter.11 Susanna remained with her mother through the 1753 to 1760 household examination and is not a good match for your Susanna.
I began a search of the Ljusnarsberg household examination of 1730 to 1747 for any variation of the names of Carin Thomasdotter and Susanna Hansdotter, but did not have time to complete the search. We should also further research Carin and Susanna's Fellingsbro connections. I found some online submissions for Susanna and have been in contact with the Swedish submitters and will hopefully glean something useful from them. One of them, Bengta Källström, would also like to be in touch with you as Susanna's relative. Her address is bengtakallstrom@mail.se if you would like to write to her. We may have to find a researcher in Sweden who can search some of the records that I cannot access.
Sincerely,
Susan Glenn, AG
