Research Report from Trudy Schenk, 12 April 2004

Dear Jerry:

I have now searched three of the films from the Wetter marriage contracts. These records are very different from any normal marriage entries. They only include people where the court was involved because of an inheritance, perhaps one partner being a widow or widower, or children from a previous marriage. Therefore not all of the marriages that took place are included.

I did extract all marriages where a person by the name of Briehl was included. The marriage of Martin Briehl who came to America was not included, but in 1693 a marriage of a Martin Briehl, son of a Martin is recorded. I am sure this is your ancestor, not the emigrant, but his father, because he is from Niederasphe. I made a copy of this particular marriage contract. There are three pages to it. I am sending you this copy so you have an idea of how much there is to check.

I will send you the extracted information. It is not known in each case if the date given is the actual marriage date. I'm sure it is the month and year however.

I did not totally translate this marriage contract, if it is of interest to you, I can do it. Now there is one film left to search, it is the earliest from 1627-1689. There is still some money left from the retainer you sent. Let me know what you think. Trudy Schenk.
