Dear Jerry,
I was so very impressed with the background info on the Amick family you sent. So very professional. I regret that I have such a late start in genealogy as it is truly fascinating. Really should have gotten more family background in earlier years when it was so available through my parents, however better late than never.

I am enclosing what I have on the Amicks from my mother Mabel Amick to Theodore, son of David Lee, son of George Davis, Son of Joseph, son of John Amick. The ancestral file LDS for Geo. Emig, John and Michael also enclosed, very confusing which is the reason I was making calls to the John Amick contributors.

I do have newspaper articles on deaths, some death certificates, articles on Rock Bluffs, Cass Co., Geo Amick's wil, probates and census reports if you would be interested.

Am really appreciative that you took the time to answer my query. I have read and reread your research and truly appreciate the time and effort spent in your search. The land deed for Mary Amick in 1835 Guernsey Co., Ohio is about the time that Joseph and his family was in Guernsey Co.

Thank you again,

Dorothy L. Popa

Joseph Amick, son of John Amick was born in the y ear 1800 to John and Mary Amick in Bedford Co., Pa. Joseph married Mary Ann in Bedford Co., Pa. They had 10 children: George Davis born 1831, Bedford; Sarah E. born 1832 Bedford; Ann E. born 1834, Bedford; Henriette born 1836 Bedford; William C. born 1837 Guernsey, Ohio; John Phillip born 1839 Millwood, Guernsey, OH; Mary Amick born 1842, Union, Monroe, OH; Margaret A. born 1846, Union, Monroe, Ohio; Joseph born 1850, Union, Monroe, OH; Thomas C. born 1854, Des Moines Co., OH.

In 1838 the family moved to Millwood Twp., Guernsey, Ohio and lived on a farm there. In 1840 they moved to Union, Monroe Co., Ohio until 1854, when Joseph, Mary Ann and the children relocated to Des Moines Co., Burlington, Iowa in the company of the eldest son, George and Family. Thomas C. was born there.

On 14 Oct 1856 they moved to Rock Bluffs Precinct, Cass Co., NE and pre-empted the land there. Every settler could file on 160 acres, but had to go to Omaha to pre-empt. In March of 1856, the land office was opened and the price was $1.25 per acre. The town of Rock Bluff was organized on 10 Jun 1856 and on 3 Nov 1858 the legislative assembly of Nebraska passed a bill of corporation for Rock Bluff and North Rock Bluff.

Joseph died 18 Aug 1875 and Mary Ann died 26 Jul 1877. They share a tall headstone, Jos on one side, Mary on the other. On the side is the inscription, "Their warfare is o'er". They are buried at Eight Mile Grove Cemetery, Cass Co., NE. Joseph left an estate of about $200 and real estate valued at $3200 for a total of $3400, per County court Cass Co, NE.

George Davis Amick, son of Joseph and Mary Ann Amick was born in Bedford Co., Pa 20 Mar 1831. In 1837 his family relocated to Guernsey Co., Ohio when George was 7 years old. he married Mary L. Sterret Archer sometime in 1849, supposedly Noble Co., Ohion, but could have been Bern Twp., Athens Co., Ohio where they appear in the 1850 Federal Census. Mary was the widow of Abraham Archer who died 29 July 1847 in Woodsfield, Ohio. She had a sizeable dower of 3 properties appraised at $600, $300 and $400, $1300 total and also 4 children by Abraham. Michael Archer 1837, Elizabeth Archer 1839, Charles 1844, and Harvey 1846. Mary was born in Pa, 13 Jun 1818.

George and Mary had 5 children, son Joseph died at 2 years and 4 months, and another son James who died at 3 weeks old. Minerva born 1849 Nobel Co., Ohio, John W. born 1851, Athens Co., Ohio and David Lee born 24 Apr 1856 Des Moines Co., Iowa 12 miles from Burlington, Iowa.

In 1854 George and family, Joseph and family moved to Des Moines Co., Iowa to farm lands near Burlington, Iowa. The treaty between the U.S. Gov't and the Indians where they relinquished all title to lands bordering the Missouri River was ratified 19 Nov 1854, large numbers of people had gathered on the Iowa side of the river, ready at any time to cross the river and stick their claim stakes on the coveted land of Nebraska.

George caught the Nebraska fever and in 1856, with his father Joseph moved to Cass Co., and marked his pre-emption in the western part of Rock Bluffs Precinct near Murray, NE. George and family braved all the perils and dangers of pioneer life and became the owners of nearly 500 acres of beautifully cultivated land and orchards. Mary died 29 Aug 1896 at the age of 78. George died 17 Mar 1903, both near Murry Cass Co., NE and both are buried at Eight Mile Grove, Cass Co., NE. George died leaving real estate valued at $35,000 and personal property valued at $2500 to be divided equally among John, Minerva Slocum, David Amick and Grandson Theodore Amick, per Cass Co., Court House 23 Mar 1903 Will.

David Lee Amick was born on a farm in Des Moines co., Iowa, 12 miles west of Burlington on 24 Apr 1856 to George Davis and Mary Sterrett Amick. David married Ruth Hickman in Monona Co., near Whiting Iowa on 11 Jan 1880. Ruth was born 29 Jun 1859 in Iowa. Ruth's parents, David Hickman and Sarah Maple were friends of the Amicks in Ohio and came to Iowa with them. They had located on the Iowa side.

David came as an infant to Cass Co., NE near Murray, Mynard, NE, 2 miles east of old Eight Mile Grove when his father George Davis Amick settled there. David and Ruth had one son, George B. born 28 Jan 1881, died 7 Feb 1881 and a son Theodore Lee born 30 Dec 1881. They resided on the farm then moved to Plattsmouth where David became the city Marshal. later they spent about a year in Arkansas near Monticello where David and Theodore had large farms of cotton. The weather and conditions in Arkansas did not agree with David, so he returned to Plattsmouth in 1913 approximately and operated the Smith Garage on Vine street.

Mabel Ruth, daughter of Theodore lived with Ruth and David since she was a baby. Mabel got sick and since Rosella was expecting her second child, Ruth took Mabel to care for her and would get very ill whenever her parents tried to get her back, according to Helen Amick Parks.

David died 17 May 1916 in Plattsmouth, Cass Co., NE of pneumonia. He is buried at Eight Mile Grove Cemetery, Cass Co., in the family plot. He died intestate leaving real estate of 160 acres valued at $150 per acre at $24,000 and also a large inventory of goods in the garage he owned including 3 or 4 cars. Ruth died 15 Dec 1927 on the farm 3 miles north of Murray, NE, in Cass Co. and is also buried at Eight Mile Grove Cemetery.

I found you on the Bedford County USGenWeb page. I am a descendant of John AMICK the blacksmith, 1770-1844, both in Bedford Co. My line is pretty well defined back to him, but we don't have anything on his parents or siblings. Do you? I am descended from his son Joseph, and I don't have the maiden name of Joseph's wife, Mary Ann. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm willing to share what I have.

Thanks, Hal Amick

Hal,

I want to apologize to you. I was just now going over my list of incoming questions for the last 4- 6 wks, and I found your E-mail of Sept 23. I know that I read it , but somehow I managed to forget to respond.

After saying that, I don't know if I can help you at all. I have John's father listed as: Joseph Ehmik / Amick.

I have some records of a Johann and Maria Emich wit: a baptism in Loudon Co., Va. in 1796, abt the same time they were married. If I had to guess at this point, and I do have- since I don't know, Loudon Co., Vir or Bucks Co., Pa. would seem like a good place to search for John Amick's ancestors records. The Emichs in Bucks Co., seem to be in the approx. same place as the Brill family, but my Bucks Co. church records don't go back far enough to show John's possible ancestors. I'd love to take a trip to Bucks Co. for a week or so and spent time in the Court House.

I have a lot of info on John Amicks wife Catherine Maria Brill's family, but I suppose you do also.

I'd be glad to share whatever info that you think would be helpful. Next time I will respond quickly!!

Amick

Eugene Earle Amick -born on 26 January 1919 at Boonville Mo -studied at the University of Kansas City and Rockhurst College before entering William Jewell College in 1937. After graduating from the latter in 1941. Amick enlisted in the Naval Reserve on 19 September 1941. Following preliminary training he was appointed a midshipman on 13 February 1942 and entered the United States Naval Reserve Midshipman's School at Northwestern University. Upon his successful completion of the officers candidate course there, he was commissioned ensign on 14 May 1 942 and assigned to Astoria (CA-34).

Amick served in that cruiser during the early summer of 1942 as she prepared to participate in the first Allied thrust in the Pacific the invasion of the Solomon Islands at Guadalcanal. He was killed on the second night after the original landings as Allied warships attempted to protect American beachheads in the Battle of Savo Island in the small hours of 9 August.

Amick (DE-168) was laid down on 30 November 1942 by the Federal Shipbuilding & Drydock Co., Newark, N.J. launched on 27 May I 1943 sponsored by Mrs. Mary R. Amick, widow of Ens. Amick. and commissioned at the New York Navy Yard on 26 July 1943,Lt. Comdr. Francis C. B. McCune in command.

Amick left the east coast early in September for shakedown training out of Bermuda. During this cruise, the ship was also engaged in operations testing defensive devices-then under development-which it was hoped would protect American ships against acoustic torpedoes.

In early November, Amick became a member of Task Force 62 and began duty as an escort for transatlantic convoys. The ship also acted as flagship for Escort Division (Cort Div) 15. From November 1943 through May 1945, she completed nine round-trip voyages across the Atlantic. These terminated in several different ports: Casablanca, Morocco, Gibraltar, Bizerte. Tunisia Palermo, Sicily; and Oran, Algeria. Only one of her convoys was ever harassed by enemy forces. On 1 August 1944, German planes attacked the convoy while it was sailing in the Mediterranean off Cape Bengut Algeria, but failed to damage any ship.

During her 18 months of wartime operations in the Atlantic, Amick entered either the New York or the Boston Navy Yard for short availabilities at the completion of each westward crossing. As a rule, she then proceeded to Casco Bay. Maine, or Montauk Point. N.Y.. for training exercises before joining another convoy.

On 28 May 1945, Amick sailed from Boston with Cort Div 15 bound for the Pacific. They paused at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. for one week of training and then proceeded to the Canal Zone. The destroyer escorts transited the Panama Canal on 10 June and sailed on to San Diego, Calif From that port.. Amick and her sister ships headed for the Hawaiian Islands and moored at Pearl Harbor on the 29th.

After a fortnight of exercises out of Pearl Harbor, Cort Div 15 got underway for Eniwetok. Amick sailed for the Mariana Islands and, at Saipan, reported to Task Unit (TU) 94.7.2 for duty The destroyer escort completed one voyage to Okinawa and back before sailing for the Western Caroline Islands. On 15 August, while en route to UIithi, she received word of Japan's capitulation.

Amick touched at Ulithi on the 16th; and, three days later, she reached Peleliu in the Palau Islands and joined TU 94.6.1. On 23 August, several Navy and Marine Corps officials embarked in Amick for passage to the northern Palau Islands. There, they held a series of conferences with Japanese officers which culminated on 1 September in the unconditional surrender of all Japanese forces in the northern Palaus. which was received by the Americans in the wardroom on board Amick.

On 3 November, Amick departed Peleliu, bound for the United States. She made brief stops at Saipan and Pearl Harbor before arriving back at San Diego on 22 November.

The destroyer escort was reassigned to the Atlantic Fleet on 1 December and, shortly thereafter, got underway for the east coast. She reached Jacksonville, Fla., on 3 January 1946 and entered a shipyard there for repairs. After this work was completed, she was assigned to Cort Div 12 and berthed at Green Cove Springs, FIa., to undergo preservation work prior to deactivation.

The warship remained semi-active at Green Cove Springs , serving as a receiving ship for sailors from other ships competing the inactivation process, until herself decommissioned on 16 May 1947. After eight years in reserve. Amick was loaned to Japan on 14 June 1955 under the terms of the Mutual Self-Defense Assistance Program. She served in the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force as ., Ashia (DE-262) until returned to the Navy early in l975. On 6 January 1975, she was reclassified a frigate and redesignated FF- 168. Not long thereafter, she was determined to be unfit for further service. and her name was struck from the Navy list on 15 June 1975. She was sold to the Republic of the Philippines in September of 1976.

Dear Marcia:
I will look up your family in my data file and see if I have anything on them. Frederick is a Mower name used a lot in the Bedford Co., Pa area. The name has been spelled a dozen different ways, but ALL of the Mower names go back to the original German spelling of MAURER, meaning one who builds walls (a mason). I would not be surprised if your Frederick ties into the Pa. Mowery (Maurer) families. Do you have any information on your ancestry?

Rochelle,

Sorry to be so long in replying to this email. Of the Elizabeth AMICK's in my files, none married a HAINSEY. Almost all of the early AMICK data that I have came from Jerry MOWER who has continued to do research on that family. While I added information when it comes to me, I do not active work on the AMICK family.

I've got an Elizabeth Amick who was the mother of Frederick Hainsey. Frederick was born Aug 5 1841 in Blair County. The Elizabeth you mentioned is obviously not the Frederick's mother. My Elizabeth was married to Henry Hainsey, date unknown. What do you know about your Elizabeth's mothers, grandmothers, aunts, etc.? Thanks. Rochelle Riling

Jerry,
Thanks for the file. I finally had time to sit down and import it last night. It opened without any trouble. I was excited but unfortunately couldn't get the men in this house to share my enthusiasm last night because the Indians vs. New York game had started. Thanks again. If I find anything new I'll pass it on.

I received your Amick file in the mail. Attached to this file is a ged.com file that you ought to be able to import into your genealogy program on your computer and read this file. Just put it into new file and import it. It will give you the Brill genealogy and Maurer genealogy that you are probably missing. Let me know if you can read it.

Thanks,
