SEPTEMBER 1998 NEWSLETTER
As you can see, we have been busy with e-mail tracing various lines of the Maurer family. We had good success finding 26 descendants of Martin Brill by connecting with a distant cousin. (See last e-mail in this letter). When Trudy reports, I will include it. Thanks for all who help out. Jerry

Subject: Maurer
I remain a fan of your research. Wish more people devoted as much time,
organization and money to researching their families.
I noticed mention of research in Rheinhessen, the area around Alzey, north
of Worms and east of Bad Kreuznach. I, too, believe it to be a rich source
of emigrants to Pennsylvania in the 1700s.
I have recently begun correspondence with a Maurer in this area, a retired
journallist who has done good work on his family tree. He sent me his tree,
but it's copyrighted, so I don't feel free to forward it to you, but I
believe he would welcome correspondence from other researchers of the
Maurer (and M”urer) surname in this area, back to the 1500s. I do not have
his address handy, but can obtain it if you'd like it. I found out about
Mr. Maurer s through his son, living in New Zealand, who posted a query on
the Maurer surname query page on the Internet.

Hi!!! We finally finished the family names you sent. John, Dan--our newly returned missionary son from Portugal, and I completed the sealings last night--5 other members joined us so we had a complete team to do both the sealings of sons and daughters and well as spouses. I was just going through the stack of cards that I'm planning to send you today and noticed that we have one male to complete his endowments--I don't know how that happened. We went through a session last night and my husband or son could've done the work. Our temple just went to the computerized cards and so there were several people ahead of me to get their files printed. Anyway...we will complete the work and send it on later. Thanks again for all you help. Cindy

Subject: Maurer's in Bedford County
The Maurer's I'm related to are all in Mercer Co. Ohio, but I found it
interesting that there are Maurer's buried in Bedford County. I am going to
have to look up in the Historical Library to see if I can find the
cemeteries they are in.
This is all I know about my Maurer's: Christian Maurer came to America
in 1836 from Germany. He was 16 years old. He settled in Ohio and
married Veronick Sophronia Marbaugh from Berne, Switzerland. They had the
following children, Lydia, Elizabeth, Mary b.1857, Susan, and John. Mary
was my gr-gr-grandmother. She married William Henry Diegel.

Jerry Mower,
Thanks. I've run across a Christian Maurer in Wabash Co., Ind. in the
1840s-1860s; think he may have had a daughter Lydia, so he could have
moved from Ohio to Indiana, as my Maurers did.
The dead letter office of the Wabash Co., Ind. area had one addressed to
Christian Maurer. I would give a sum of money to find out if it was
addressed to "my" Christian or the other one present in the area at that
time, and I would dearly love to read it if it was indeed addressed to
my Christian, as very little has survived in my family from that era.

Heidelberg, Germany
P.S. I continue to make very slow progress in reading the old German
script, and am highly pleased to see that the LDS church now has most
church records of Canton Bern, Switzerland on microfilm or microfiche.
the pear and apple crops are good this year in the Heidelberg area, but
the wasp crop is good, too, and they are destroying many of the pears
and apples, and they dearly love to attack Zwetschgenkuchen (plum cake).
A German bakery I was in the other day had 80-200 wasps, many of them
attacking the sweet pastries. Ugh. I've never seen anything quite like
it in 22 years in Germany.
Alles gute (best wishes),
mike

Subject: MARKLE - MEARKLE family
Janet,
Saw your query on the Bedford Co. website:
"Bedford County, PA (April 11, 1815)
John PENDERGAST marries Barbara MARKLE.
John is the son of John PENDERGAST SR and Hanna GRAYDON of Philadelphia, PA.
Barbara is the daughter of Mary and Peter MARKLE. I have no other information on the MARKLE family."
Years ago I got some data on the MEARKLE family which included a Peter with no dates and no wife, his father was also Peter, born about 1745, and he had at least two children: Susanna, born abt 1801, and David, born abt 1810. Time frame would allow for a daughter old enough to be married in 1815. Possibly Jerry may have obtained more data since then.

Subject: KOLB/KUPP - AMICK/EMICK
Jerry, I see that you are researching both these names.
I am a decendant of Philip ENGARD & Catherine (CLEAVER) who had two daughters, Anna Margaret Engard KOLP, & Mary Engard AMICK.
Are you familiar with this Upper Dublin, Montgomery Co., PA family of the 1700's?
Look forward to hearing from you.

Her address is Lois Masters 510 NW 10th - Hermiston Oregon 97838 .
She must come from the same line that you do because she said that
she was not related to the Stiers line. Roberta
