JULY 1998 NEWSLETTER
REPORT ON AMELIA AUGUSTA (ANDERSON) MOWER RESEARCH by Linda K. Larson
Dear Jerry:
I have researched the lines of Anders (or Andrew) Andersson, who was born 31 Oct 1832. This is indeed a difficult research problem and it took me some time to sort it out. I will give you all the details.
I began by verifying the family of Anders Andersson and Christina Lovisa Aronsdotter, particularly the birth records on the children, and the births and marriage of the parents. I used both the clerical survey records (similar to census records) and the parish registers which include the birth/christenings, marriages, and deaths/burials. As you said, the information on this family is correct.
Anders Andersson was born 31 Oct 1832, and his parents are listed as Anders Persson Vester and Anna Jansdotter. This is where the research became difficult and some of your previous information was incorrect. Virtually all of the clerical survey records for the time period when Anders Persson was an adult list only his birth year of 1805. When I checked the Lindesberg parish birth records (from the parish registers) I discovered that there were six individuals with the name of Anders Pehrsson who were born in 1805 at Lindesberg! I will list each of these for you:
1. Anders, born 1 Jan 1895, the son of Petter Jonsson and wife Catharina Pehrsdotter of Monkhytta.
2. Anders, born 16 Apr 1805, the son of Petter Nyberg and wife Maria Pehrsdotter of Ostra Bohr.
3. Anders, born 27 Apr 1805, the son of Pehr Andersson and wife Stina Andersdotter of Wasselhyttan. You will note that this is the birth date given previously for your ancestor, but the names of the parents do not match.
4. Anders, born 1 May 1805, the son of Petter Pehrsson and wife Maria Andersdotter of Gusselby.
5. Anders, born 6 Oct 1805, the son of Petter Andersson and Catharina Andersdotter of Faboda.
6. Anders, born 9 Dec 1805, the son of Pehr Pehrsson and Christina (Stina) Andersdotter of Ingelshyttan. You will note that these are the parents who were listed as the parents of the Anders born 27 Apr 1805. So your previous researcher matched the wrong birth date and parents.
The problem then was to determine which of the above individuals was your ancestor. The residence within the parish is often a helpful factor, as is the additional surname, that of Vester. However, in this case neither proved to be very helpful. First I checked the clerical survey records for each of the six individuals or families listed above. The clerical survey records showed that two of the individuals born in 1805 died young. These were the ones born 16 Apr and the one born 6 Oct. So neither of these individuals could be your ancestor, in as much as neither lived to adulthood. The additional surname of Vester is given at the birth of your ancestor, Anders Andersson, and this should have been helpful. However, in tracing the family of Anders Persson and Anna Jansdotter on the clerical survey records, I discovered that one of the clerical survey records (1832-42 at Wasselhyttan) listed your ancestor as Anders Persson Sor. Non of the clerical surveys list the name of Vester. The clerical survey records also showed that the Sor name was used by Petter Pehrsson, father of the Anders born 1 May 1805, and at first I thought that perhaps this was the correct family.
The place name within the parish should have also been helpful. Of the four remaining individuals named Anders, you will note that one was from Monkhytta, one from Wasselhyttan, one from Gusselby, and one from Ingelshyttan. However, during his lifetime, your ancestor, Anders Persson, resided at Ingelshyttan, Wasselhyttan, and Gusselby! At this point I was beginning to think that perhaps the clerk and/or parish priest had also gotten confused, due to the fact that there were four individuals named Anders Persson, all born in 1805. It is extremely unlikely that your ancestor would have used both the Vester and Sor surnames.
Finally, I followed your ancestor, Anders Persson and his wife Anna Jansdotter, in the clerical survey records, back to the time when they were married. This finally solved the problem, as I located them just after they were married, at Ingelshyttan, residing with his mother, Stina Andersdotter, and her second husband, also named Pehr Pehrsson. The full birth date of Anders Persson is also given here, 9 Dec 1805. Therefore, we may be certain that this is indeed the correct one. You will note that I have not listed either the Vester or Sor surnames, because these only confuse the issue in this case. It does appear to me that the parish clerk or parish priest made an error in listing one or both of these names.
This was undoubtedly a very difficult research problem and I can understand why this line may have been mixed up. However, you will note that the previous researcher had the correct lineage, but the wrong birth date for Anders Persson. To me this shows a lack of good notes and care. Many researchers use mainly the clerical survey records, but much of the information in the clerical survey records is incomplete, if not completely inaccurate. Therefore, it is extremely important to use both the clerical survey records and the parish registers as well. This is quite time consuming, but very important.
I will now proceed to give you the lineage on this line. Anders Persson and Anna Jansdotter were married in 1829 and they had five children. I was unable to locate the birth record on child #3 so she may have been christened at another parish.
The lineage from this point on is the same as previously listed. Petter or Per Persson and Christina Andersdotter were married in 1785 and the clerical survey records list five children, all born at Ingelshytte or Ingelshyttan. Please note that this family and most of the remaining ones need additional research. I have not yet had time to verify the dates from the parish registers and this needs to be done.
Petter or Per Persson was born in 1763 at Ingelshyttan, Lindesberg, the son of Pehr Ersson and wife Stina Joransdotter. They had at least five children, but here again, the dates need to be verified, and further research is needed.
I was able to extend your line with Stina Joransdotter. She was born at Ramsberg parish, but the birth date listed in the clerical survey was incorrect. However, I was able to identify her parents, Joran or Gioran Ersson and wife Anna Joensdotter. They were married in 1708 at Ramsberg and it appears that they had eleven children.
There was also another Joran Ersson at Skogstorp in Ramsberg, whose wife was Anna Ohlsdotter, so this research is also difficult. The only Stina (Chiersten) Joransdotter which I was able to locate at Ramsberg was born in 1729, but the mother is listed as Anna Ohlsdotter, which I believe is incorrect. The witnesses and the clerical survey records at Lindesberg do show that Stina had a sister Margareta, a brother Erich, and a brother Johan. She is also listed with her parents on the Lindesberg clerical survey, although many of the dates are incorrect. I still need to check the Ramsberg clerical survey records, but the film was not available when I was at the library. I have ordered this film and will continue this research next time.
Joran Ersson died in 1749 at Ingelshyttan in Lindesberg, and his widow Anna Joensdotter was remarried in 1751 to Anders Ersson. I have also identified the marriages and/or families of several of the other children to Joran Ersson and Anna Joensdotter. They are your 6th great granduncles and 6th great grand aunts:
Erich Joransson was married in 1741 to Anna Hansdotter of Danshyttan in Lindesberg. The clerical survey record does not show any children.
Johan Joransson was married in 1750 to Maria Hansdotter of Ingelshyttan in Lindesberg.
Margareta Joransdotter was married in 1753 at Lindesberg to Lars Nilsson of Jonshyttan. The clerical survey records show five children.
Anna Joransdotter was married about 1752 to Pehr Pehrsson of Danshyttan in Lindesberg. They had at least two children.
I will now go to pedigree chart #3 for the lineage of Christina Andersdotter, wife of Petter or Per Pehrsson. She was born in 1766 at Wasselhyttan in Lindesberg, the daughter of Anders Andersson and wife Maria, presumably Hansdotter. Anders Andersson was born 1739 at Ljunarsberg parish, the son of Anders Larsson and Karin Andersdotter.
On pedigree chart #4 is the lineage of Jan Mattsson, father of Anna Jansdotter. Anna was born in 1797 at Bjorkanget in Ljunarsberg parish, the daughter of Jan Mattsson and Catharina Ersdotter.
I have not had time to check for other children.
In light of the difficulties and inaccuracies on the lineage of Anders Andersson, I decided that I would also spend some time researching the lines of Christina Lovisa Aronsdotter. In as much as her family was also from Lindesberg parish, I was able to do this research at the same time, and so it did not require a great deal of additional time. I did discover one area on her pedigree which was incorrect, and I will give you full details shortly.
Christina Lovisa was born 6 Dec 1836 at Snuggan in Lindesberg, the daughter of Aron Svensson and wife Christina Elisabeth Jansdotter. I found record of four children, and I was able to locate the marriages of two of the sisters of Christina Elisabeth, who are your 3rd great grand aunts:
Carolina Aronsdotter was married in 1854 to Carl Magnus Ljunggren from Atorp in Nasby parish.
Anna Elisabeth Aronsdotter was married in 1860 to Johann Eric Qvarnstrom of Kandla in Ljunarsberg parish.
Aron Svensson was born in 1804 at Munkhyttan, the son of Sven Larsson and Anna Pehrsdotter. They were married in 1799 at Lindesberg and had at least four children. You will note that I have listed a different birth date and parents for Anna Pehrsdotter. The Anna Pehrsdotter which was listed in your previous research is incorrect, so the lineage beyond this point was wrong. Your previous research showed that Anna Pehrsdotter was born 25 Jan 1762, the daughter of Pehr Nilsson and Cajsa K. Andersdotter, but my research shows that this is in error.
At the marriage of Sven Larsson and Anna Pehrsdotter, Anna's brother, Eric Pehrsson, of Fornaboda was listed as a witness. He was married in 1794 to Anna Andersdotter and they had at least three children. Also, the last clerical survey record on Anna Pehrsdotter, prior to her death in 1844, lists her birth date as 24 Dec 1770 at Lindesberg. Anna's parents were Pehr Persson and Lisa (or Elisabeth) Andersdotter of Fornaboda. Pehr Persson was married secondly to Anna Maja Jansdotter.
One of the children of Sven Larsson and Anna Pehrsdotter was Sven Svensson. He was married in 1834 to Maja Greta Carlsdotter of Lindesberg. Sven Svensson is your 4th great granduncle. He and his wife had at least one child, Anders Svensson, who was married to Anna Christina Andersdotter.
Sven Larsson was born in 1767, the son of Lars Larsson and wife Maria Nilsdotter. They were married about 1764 and had at least four children.
That covers the research which I have done for you to date. I want to stress again that virtually all of the family group sheets need further research and/or documentation. Many of the dates have been taken from the clerical survey records but still need to be verified from the parish registers. As I said, this is time consuming, but it is essential to be sure that the research is accurate and complete.
