Weiand March 7th 1911 The next minister of whom we have records was Rev. Deitteaman, who was pastor in Bedford sometime between 1812 and 1818. He was followed by Rev. Osterloh in 1818, who continued his labors here until the year 1828. Mr. Osterloh was a native of Germany, and the earliest church records we have were made during his pastorate. The records were written in German language, but upon translation prove to be deaths of the early members of this church, some of whose decendants are among our members now, faithful to the church of their forefathers choice. At this time Bedford church had about one hundred members many of them living from five to ten miles distant. It was during his pastorate that the old Union Brick Church was built at the cornor of John and Thomas streets, for some years prior to 1823 the corner stone of the new church was laid, it is said by Rev. William Yeager of Friends Cove on the part of the Lutherns and Rev. J .H. Gerhart on part of the Reformed Church. This house was dedicated to service of God, Sept. 19, 1824. From this time until 1846 the congregations used this building alternately. Mr. Osterloh's successor was Rev. Wm. Yeager, who continued to serve this and neighboring churches until 1838. His field of labor, as that of his predecessors was of such great extent that he just have felt as he contemplated the work awaiting him, "Who is sufficient for these things"., But he was a man of remarkable piety undaunted spirit and great love for his church. He accepted no salary and though his health was poor, he braved the dangers of exposure of long rides through unsettled districts that he might save souls. It can be said truthfully of him, "He was a man of God". Father Yeager as he was called, was succeded by Rev. Wm. L. Gibson in 1838 and he labored here until 1841. He was an enthusiastic worker in his pastorate. Rev. Reuben Weisor was the next pastor. He continued here from Aug 1 1841 to April 1 1846. In the church records made, he had written the following words which evidence to us the difficulties with which he was meeting and the earnest spirit he brought to combat them, "When I took charge of the Luthern Congregation of Bedford, the members were very much scattered; whether I shall be able to bring them together only God knows, I will try. R. Weisor." During his pastorate many members were added and the church was put on a firmer foundation than ever before. Schellsburg was part of this charge at the time of Mr. Weisor was instrumental in having a Luthern church built at this place and from that time Schellsburg had a minister distinct from Bedford. In after years the title of Doctor of Divinity was conferred upon him. Rev. P. M. Rughtmeyer was the next pastor in the Bedford Church, taking charge April 1 1846 and leaving in one year. Up to this time the church was lighted with sperm and tallow candles and heated by wood fires in the old fashioned tin-plate stoves. The sexton was paid the magnificient yearly sum of fifteen dollars. The next minister was Rev. J. Winecoff who came here in April 1 1847 and remained two years. During his pastorate the membership numbered one hundred and forty. The Luthern Congregation in Bedford worshipped in the Old Luthern and Reformed Union Church on John Street, until the summer of 1849 when the new Church on the Public Square was completed. The new Church was built in 1871, the audience room was completed 1877 and dedicated the second Sunday of December 1877. Prior to 1849 the Luthern and Reformed Congregations worshipped in the Union Church on John Street, and the building there was built 1823, the corner stone being laid July 11, 1823. This structure has been preceded by a Log Church on the ground, the date of the erection of which is not known. S/S John Lutz Bedford Pa. 1843 By certificate of Baptism shown me by Jacob Dibert, whose Parents Charles and Mary lived on the Old Nathaniel Smith property on the Hickory Bottom Road and who were Lutherans, it appears that a Lutheran Preacher named Frederick Hainsel, Preached and Baptized Lutheran Children here in 1805. This certificate is dated May 23, 1805. The Luthern Congregation sold to the Reformed in 1850. Rev. John Casper Bucher was a Commissioned Officer of the Pa. Troops under Gen. Forbes, who rendezvoued in 1758 and afterwards was a Missionary of the Luthern and Ref. Church in Bedford or Raystown in 1765. Rev. Steck in 1785 and the time of service is not known. Rev. Fred'k Hainsey was a German. His Father came to America as a Chaplain of the Hessian Troops serving under King Geo., IV in the War of the Revolution. Some of his descendants were living in the Northern part of Bedford County in 1905 and 1906. While there is no record of the fact, he is believed to have served the Bedford Congregation, as it appears to have been the only Luthern Congregation at that time. Records translated from German Script into English. No. 1 Pg 241 Philipine, wife of Michael Ott, was born 13 Feb. 1771, and Bpt immediately after. There by her Parents George Sill and his wife Dorothy Holzman were acting as GodFather and Mother. As time progressed, she was confirmed to the Holy Sacrament of year 1779, August 13th. In year 1789 she married Michael Ott. She became Mother of 7 Sons and 5 Daughters for which 4 sons and 4 girls living. Of which 1 Son and 2 girls were married and in consequence the deceased became GrandMother of 8 children. She fell sick 15 month ago and died of age 48 year 7 mos and 5 da. No. 2 Catharine Mueller born Schmidt, B Jan 2, 1780 Bpt soon after birth. Confirmed and admitted to Holy Sacrament. Married to Henrich Mueller 1795. Brought forth 9 children; 6 Sons and 3 daughter, which 1 daughter died 3rd April 1819 age 39 years.
