Research Update:
We have been quite successful this month researching records available to
us of the Hornbach, Germany area. Tedi Jeen and I have been identifying
all Maurer and Brill persons found on the Reformed Church records of
Zweibruecken. Zweibruecken is just 6 miles from our Maurer and Brill
ancestral homes of Boeckweiler and Hornbach. Being the largest town of the
area, we began our research here. We ordered 9 microfilms on this area
into our Family History Branch library in Afton, where we have logged
nearly 200 hours reading and translating the old German script since
Christmas. I have really come to appreciate Tedi Jeen's ability to read
it. Some of it is incredibly hard to translate!
We have identified about 120 entries relating to our relatives. We are putting these onto family group sheets where possible and trying to make sense of relationships. I will provide you with some transcriptions each month of these records. They are very interesting to read. We haven't located the records relating to our Michael Maurer yet, but we have identified him as an inhabitant of Hornback in 1742. We have also identified a Michell Maurer living in 1742 in nearby Mimbach--just a couple miles away. It is my unproven guess at this point that we have both of our Michael's located. One of them is Michael Maurer, the father of our Andrew Maurer, and the other Michael is the father of Anna Maria Maurer who married Martin Brill. More time and effort, and research is needed here. I located a map of the area showing parish boundaries and this helps locate records. We'll find our people I believe.
Our goal is to identify as many Brill and Maurers as possible and to search all the records available through the FH Library regarding this area. We hope by then to have our German genealogist searching records on that end to which we don't have access. All of the individuals we identify are going into a special computer file of "possible or probable relatives". It is pretty hard not to believe that villages 1 to 6 miles apart, with Maurer families living in them and attending the same Church, are not related to each other. Hornbach for example, only had 84 families living there at the time we are interested in. The three Maurer families there, Michael, Andrew and Gottffried are likely related.
