M O W E R F A M I L Y N E W S L E T T E R
JULY 4, 1990
We have had a very good month in regards to research. Tedi Jeen and I were able to spend 8 full days in June at the Family History Library researching on the Mower and Amick lines. We have met personally with Mr. Petty, our professional genealogist, and compared notes and strategized as to future research. Here is an update:
1. Mr. Petty has submitted a report in regards to his research to date. I will enclose a copy of that report. His report is helpful and if anything when you read it you will understand how truly complicated searching out the origins of Michael Maurer are. He is making progress however.
2. Tedi Jeen and I have compiled family group sheets for all of the Mowers living in Bedford County, Pennsylvania 1800-1900 that we possibly could identify. Since many times the name is spelled Mowry, or Mowery we have included those names as well. We are sure that we are related to many of those families. The records of connection are not readily available however, so we have simply submitted for temple work all the names that qualified. We have put families on pedigree charts where we could and have some families with 6 generations during that 100 year period. This work has taken us some several hundred hours to do.
3. We have worked down through the census reports on the John Amick line identifying the descendants of John Amick. We have found many, many names of his descendants who have not had temple work done. These too have been submitted. I would estimate several hundred. This work, in itself, represents literally hundreds of hours of research.
4. I have made some progress in researching Samuel Mower who lived in Bedford County at the time of Andrew Mower's death and shows up on the estate papers of Michael Mower who died in 1829. We think we may have located his son, Samuel Mower, who married in Bedford County, then moved to Richland County, Ohio with his wife. He left a Will there which was contested by his brothers. I have located one of our Amick relatives who lives near there which is going to the courthouse in Mansfield Ohio and will research the contesting of the Will. We hope the results lead us to more of Samuel's children and perhaps to Samuel himself.
5. Shirley Wall and I have hired a researcher of the Pioneer Historical Society in Bedford County, Pa who, for $25, will research the name of any ancestor as to the local records which exist there in Bedford. We are having the names of Michael Amick (he married Molly Mower), and John Amick researched.
6. Shirley has been in contact with Amy Mower Casto who is enthusiastically helping in the work. They have a Sidney Mower Association which has done some research in the past. We need to co-ordinate work. It might be helpful if that organization would help us push Andrew Mower's line into Germany. Once we get the line into Germany this work should explode with names for temple submission. The problem at the present is in getting Michael Maurer into Germany. Thanks for Mom and Dad who watch the kids when we go to the library. See you in Payson for the Reunion on the 21st. Thank you all!!
